Honduras

Honduras is the second largest, and most mountainous, country in Central America. With a population of approximately 6 million, Honduras has two major cities, Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula. Tegucigalpa is the capital of Honduras and is a historical colonial city, while San Pedro Sula is a modern industrial city with an international flavor. Other tourist areas include the Bay Islands and the Mayan ruins at Copan. Beach cities along the mainland's north coast are also popular. Good hotels and restaurants can be found in the cities and tourist areas. Tap water in Honduras is not potable. While many hotels and restaurants claim to filter and treat the water, your only safe bet is to go with the popular bottled waters. Caution with the water includes ice.

The Honduran economy relies on banana, coffee, seafood, timber, and tobacco exports. Some of the finest cigars in the world are rolled in Honduras. Honduras also has growing light industrial (textile) and mining sectors.

As in most poorer developing countries, Honduras is plagued by a high crime rate. Carjackings, bank robberies, and crimes against tourists are fairly common throughout the country. A largely inadequate National Police Force has recently been converted from military to civilian control. Good common sense is, and always will be, your best protection while visiting Honduras.
